Between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, where the landscape is nothing but barren desert, approaching the small township of Shergarh, one can hardly prepare for the surprise that awaits at Manvar. It is not one of the regular resorts or camps that you come across. It has been very carefully designed, both architecturally and aesthetically. The exteriors are done up in the local hut style architecture with low rise buildings while the interiors, with a touch of the local area blended with the modern facilities, leaves little to imagination. The camp, a short drive from the resort is set on a dune and the elegantly appointed tents are arranged in a semi-circle with the centre being reserved for bonfire and performances. The dining tent is simple yet classy while all the tents have attached bathrooms with showers – aesthetically so well done that one cannot believe that one is in the middle of the desert! And to beat it all, the resort even has a swimming pool right in the middle of an arid, dry land!! Add to this the surrounding vibrant, colourful villages, wildlife of the desert, an opportunity to interact with the Bishnoi tribe which exists to conserve and protect nature, and you have an experience that is unsurpassed by some of the best desert resorts in the world.
Accommodation:
While the resort boasts of 21 Cottages, each having its own verandah which is supported by a sandstone pillar instead of the usual brick and mortar work, traditional Indian beds called ‘khats’ have been converted into sofas, and all pieces of interiors have been locally sourced and designed specially for the resort. The Camp instead has 30 very luxurious tents fixed on a raised platform with attached bathrooms. The tents are in fact very luxurious and and are more like mini-marquees.
Activities:
The sheer magnificence of the desert and its hidden beauty comes to the fore during a camel or jeep safari, village walks, innumerable excursions which takes you not only to visit the wildlife but also the villages and meet the locals. One experiences an area that is even today off the beaten track and where life has not changed since centuries. One sees the innovative irrigation techniques employed in the desert and sees the customs that vary from village to village or from house to house and the tribes change every inch in this heartland of the desert. One not only comes across the villages, people or animals but the very desert itself and leaves mesmerized, wanting to return again and again. Allow us to organize handpick and select activities for you in our own characteristic style that will leave you asking for more.
